From motif to material — the nine-step workflow

hi9 connects visual concept with real material development. We help clients move from pattern idea to sample, from sample to project, and from project to scalable production.

Method Overview

The method.

hi9 connects visual concept with real material development. We help clients move from pattern idea to sample, from sample to project, and from project to scalable production.

The same three-level model — Form · Meaning · Material — runs across every hi9 project. It is what lets a 1,300-year-old vine survive the journey into a contemporary Middle Eastern interior without losing its identity or fighting its new home.

The Three Levels

Form — Meaning — Material.

01
Form · 形态层

Geometry as bone, tendril as flesh几何为骨,缠枝为肉

Deconstruct the continuous S-curve vine into a minimum repeatable unit, then embed it inside an Arabic eight-point star grid.

“If only vine — too soft. If only star — no China.”
02
Meaning · 语义层

The anchor of infinity无限延展的共鸣锚

Bridge Chinese “endless growth” and Islamic “the infinite reflecting the infinite” at the shared anchor of infinity.

“One anchor. Two cultures, one reading.”
03
Material · 材质层

Wood, metal, paper, textile多载体的物理落地

Force the vine through the physics of real materials — DFM, not decoration. Material is the constraint that shapes the first sketch.

“Material is not the last step. It shapes the first.”
Nine-step Workflow

From idea to buildable surface.

01

Cultural Pattern Research

Study chan-zhi vine, Arabesque geometry and the shared anchor of infinity.

02

Motif Extraction

Deconstruct vine curve, leaf rhythm, flower node into repeatable units.

03

Line Drawing

Hand-draw and digitize the vine into a clean, scalable linework system.

04

Repeat System

Build border, central medallion and full-field layouts from one motif.

05

Color & Material Direction

Match palette and material to space — walnut, brass, emerald, ivory, stone.

06

Rendering & Space Simulation

Drop the pattern into Majlis, lobby, corridor, suite — see it in real space.

07

Sample Development

Produce physical samples — parquet, wallcovering, brass, tile, textile.

08

Production Coordination

Coordinate flooring, wallcovering, metal, tile and textile supply chains.

09

Delivery Support

Palletize, seal, load and ship for the Gulf route — project-ready.
